UEL Alumnus Online Poetry Channel

My name is Mansoor and I am a University of East London Masters graduate in 'International Legal Studies' (class of 2004).

I stayed in London between 2003-2008, during which I was connected with educational agencies that helped me with part-time jobs in the education sector and teaching law in Colleges. Currently, I live in Istanbul where I teach English.
I have a true passion for poetry and whilst teaching, I realised if I could have an online platform for students who also share a passion for poetry, this could provide an opportunity for them to watch and learn. From this, I have created a YouTube channel which you can watch by clicking here.

On my YouTube channel, there is a range of poetry, songs for you to enjoy, and even some topics for anyone who want to improve their English.

If you would like to contact Mansoor about his work please contact the UEL Alumni team at alumni@uel.ac.uk.

School of Psychology Updates

Professor John Read, Professor of Clinical Psychology, spoke to the @metrouk about the benefits of social prescribing. ‘Social prescribing is the use – particularly in primary care (GPs) – of social activities instead of (or in addition to) medication, often for mental health problems such as depression.’ Read more here.

Dr Paul Penn explains how setting your own questions can be a game-changer!  Exam preparation for students. As we approach exam season a video shot by Dr Penn for @BPSStudent reminds students not to study by simply repeatedly rereading their sources because incorporating practice testing (retrieval practice) into their revision is more effective.  Click here for more information.

Professor David Harper and Lauren Daniel Published “The Social Construction of Conspiracy Beliefs: A Q-Methodology Study of How Ordinary People Define Them and Judge Their Plausibility” in the Journal of Constructivist Psychology explores how ordinary people define and judge the plausibility of conspiracy theories.

Professor John Read lead on a two-day conference on starting on the 6th of May, as part of the @Institute_PDW, inviting leading experts from across the world to discuss withdrawal, alternatives to medication & how to change the narratives surrounding psychiatric drugs. The conference brought together worldwide experts on psychiatric drug withdrawal from lived experience, research, psychotherapy and medicine. This is the first large-scale annual conference hosted by the International Institute for Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal. It brings together experts from across the world to discuss the practical details of withdrawal, alternatives to medication, and how to change the narratives surrounding psychiatric drugs.

UEL’s Unique MSc in Sports Analytics

With the growing importance of data in sports, UEL has designed a masters course that gives students the opportunity to learn valuable data analysis skills that will enhance their career prospects: MSc Sport Analytics.

The course includes lectures and tutorials surrounding data visualization softwares that are widely used within sport, such as Tableau and Power BI. It also gives students the opportunity to learn the basics of programming languages, such as Python, which is arguably one of the most sought-after skills in modern times. Due to the increased volume of data collected in sports nowadays, having the ability to analyze and visualize raw data from different sources will enable students to provide valuable insights to sports clubs and organizations.

Nowadays, sports clubs will employ individuals with data skills in roles such as Data Analysts and Data Scientists. These employees will have responsibilities that will help inform key strategic decisions both on and off the pitch. This may range from gaining additional information on a potential transfer target to helping the coaching staff understand the underlying metrics of the team that evaluate its performance.

The new course gives students the opportunity to understand how data can be used to evaluate and predict sporting performance and learn various industry-standard softwares along the way. In addition to the practical nature of the course, we also invite a range of sporting partners to deliver guest lectures and share their expertise. These include analysts from Southampton FC, West Ham United, and Sky Sports. Students will also get the opportunity to network with the guests and build connections from within the sports industry to aid their job prospects upon graduation. One of the modules on the course includes a work placement, therefore when completing the course all students will feel confident they have the practical skills, experience, and industry connections that are required to land their dream job in sports.
