ALUMNI OF THE MONTH

Due to last months Alumni of the month being a little delayed we have the pleasure of bringing you two graduates to celebrate!

Meet Tanecia Britt who completed a Masters in Film, Video & New Screen Media, 2008.

Since graduating, Tanecia continues to persue carving her path in filmmaking, with hopes of returning to London to complete her next project, "Flowers Don't Grow In England.

Tanecia's special memory of UEL was singing songs from the film ‘Sarafina’ with a dear friend under the moonlight at Docklands Campus; "Our friendship blossomed in those moments."

Next up, meet Michael Antai who completed a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Science/Immunology, 2012.

Since graduating, Michael's worked in several NHS laboratories across different pathology departments & is now a registered Biomedical Scientist.

Michael's special memory of UEL was; "The Olympics! The university was chosen as the training centre for the American contingent for the 2012 Olympics and we were selected as volunteers".

Cultural Producer's Programme: Transform your passion into profession with Creative Newham

Transform your passion into profession with Creative Newham's new training programme!
Starting in Summer 2024, the Creative Newham Cultural Producers Programme offers 6 months of in-depth training and development to help you enter the arts and heritage sectors as a Cultural Producer. 
As one of the Cultural Producers on the programme, you will build up skills and knowledge through:

  • workshops and training delivered by leading industry experts
  • mentoring and coaching
  • paid placements where you will develop skills ranging from digital production to managing finances

The programme is free and open to Newham residents aged 18-30 who have worked or volunteered in any cultural or arts-related organisation, and who have the passion and drive to pursue a career in this field. You will be paid the London Living Wage for your time participating in the programme.

Please note the application deadline for the support workshops is the 3rd of august and is especially designed for those interested in applying for the Cultural Producers Programme. 

We will be selecting 14 Cultural Producers for this year’s cohort which runs from 23rd October 2024 to 5th May 2025.
The Application deadline for the programme  is 5th September 2024 and interviews will take place late September/early October.

UEL's Creative Industries Festival: Register for free tickets!

The Creative Industries Festival will welcome creative talent, entrepreneurs, policymakers, students and graduates, academics, researchers, and everyone with a passion for the Creative Industries. During the festival there will be a host of interactive workshops, talks, panel discussions, installations, performances, exhibitions, hackathons, showcases, a talent/ careers fair, and community engagement events. The festival will be a platform for change, bringing together business and industry professionals, educators, future talent, and local communities to share knowledge, develop collaborations, initiate future innovations and start conversations to bring positive change to stakeholders throughout the creative industries.

Workshop CV & Interview Tips Workshop with Searchlight Recruitment 
This session will include a full breakdown of how to build a CV, cover letter and interview tips, with questions and cv review at the end. Searchlight Recruitment is a leading provider of recruitment and executive search for the media and entertainment industry sectors. They work with their clients to fill a wide range of positions at all levels across film, television, digital media, arts, music & games.
 
Searchlight 
The Media Industry: Which Career is Right For Me with Searchlight Recruitment  
This session would explore the different career paths that are available within the industry, exploring a variety of sectors within the media sphere. There will be an opportunity to meet with the Searchlight team after the workshop for one to one support.
 
Panel Talk- Early Careers in Film & TV with creativeLDN 
Hear from experienced professionals across various fields in the screen industries about how they got their foot in the door and found success. Panellists will share insights on their own careers, key common themes for success, and how they dealt with challenges along the way. 
 
Workshop - Emerging Screenwriters x Agent Assistants with The Developing Room 
An informal Q&A session for emerging screenwriters to meet London-based agent assistants, discuss starting in the industry, and network. This is the perfect opportunity for aspiring screenwriters to understand how representation works and how to start building a professional career from working junior agents and agent assistants, offering valuable insights into the industry. The Developing Room is a multi-award winning independent British production house, specialising in young adult films.
 
Friday Social - Immersive showcase and networking
Young talent showcase – social meet up with performances, exhibition, networking and talent scouts. Meet with like-minded creatives to build your network for future work opportunities and build your creative community
 
Talk - Navigating greenwashing as a creative with Mel Watt
As creatives, we have a choice to make: use our creativity to maintain the social license of harmful industries or use our creativity to inform, inspire and influence change. This hour-long workshop will equip you to spot and avoid greenwashing in your work amidst an emerging regulatory landscape and growing movement calling for creative climate action.

Psychology and EDUCOM Grad Connect 

UEL Professor Vassilis Fouskas from the Department of Business Entrepreneurship & Finance, is also Founder of The Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies (JBNES). JBNES is the leading English language journal for the study of modern international relations and the history, global economic relations and geopolitics of the former Ottoman and Soviet regions and states whose territories are in the Balkans and the greater Middle East. In this context, JBNES welcomes contributions in the fields of critical political economy and culture, sociology, economic history and political science.

JBNES publishes research articles, review articles and book reviews and is indexed in the Clarivate Social Sciences Citation Index. The journal encourages critical perspectives, and also accepts proposals for special issues on topical themes concerning the position of the region and its individual states in regional, European, Asian and global politics.
