Welcome to the August 2021 edition of the University of East London's Alumni Network e-newsletter.
We have some great news stories for you, including Tokyo 2020 ambition coming true for a University of East London student, and how UEL Lecturer and their son helped steer a charity into achieving inclusion.

Tokyo ambition coming true for UEL student
Currently studying a BSc degree in Sports and Exercise Science, Vanessa is hoping to go one better than her silver medal shot success at the World Para Athletics European Championships in June 2021.

Winners receive an exclusive gift and certificate as well as a guaranteed place at one of our exclusive networking events. Meet Andrew Gibson who graduated from Media and Cultural Studies in 2007.
Andrew is a Senior Commercial for Sydney Metro, building a completely new underground railway in the city and is responsible for Central Station.
Andrew had so many special memories at UEL with the amazing students and staff. One of his favourites was seeing Russell Brand in the student union!

Alumni Achievement Awards 2021
Following on from the great success of last year’s Alumni Achievement Awards, we are excited to announce that the University of East London’s Alumni team will be hosting the third Alumni Achievement Awards! We are hoping to host this year’s Alumni Achievement Awards ceremony as a hybrid event giving people the option to either join us virtually or in person.
This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the achievements of our alumni in a wide range of areas and come together to celebrate their success. This year we are pleased to announce an addition of four new awards to our categories. These include the Sporting Success award, Sustainability award, Careers Led award and the Alumni Advisory Board Change Maker award.

The University of East London students will have the opportunity to travel the world thanks to the Turing Scheme, the new government-funded initiative that allows students to study and work abroad.
The University has been granted £96,500 in funding from the Department for Education, which will allow students to link up with partner institutions across the world and experience “life changing education”.

The University of East London’s SportsDock facilities have been awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating by Quest, Sport England’s recommended provider of quality assurance for leisure and sport development facilities.
The University’s world-class sports facilities are open to students, staff, the local community, plus national and international organisations. In the past, they have been used as the training hub for Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology student Yasmin Haque has been awarded Neon Student Of The Year. A dedicated champion of under-represented communities landed the prestigious title of student of the year for her “impactful” and “dedicated” work as a curriculum ambassador. MAPPCP student, Isobel Alcock is doing an excellent piece of research with The Line London and we are looking forward to finding more about the benefits of public art walks. The experience of exploring art, natural and local heritage in urban communities: A thematic analysis of community recovery walks. Dr Paul Penn voted Higher Education Teacher of the Year 2021! On 23rd June 2021, the British Psychological Society Division of Academics, Researchers & Teachers in Psychology (BPS DARTP) and Oxford University Press were pleased to announce that the Higher Education Psychology Teacher of the Year 2021 was Dr Paul Penn. Time for Tea Catch up
The aim is to provide a place for UEL Alumni to come together for an informal social networking session.
All alumni are welcome to join either one or more ‘Time for Tea Catch Ups’. It is a chance for you to discuss any topics on your mind or just have a light-hearted chat with no formal restrictions.
