Welcome to the January 2023 edition of the University of East London's Alumni Network e-newsletter. We have some great news stories for you, including the University of East London winter graduation ceremonies, as well as England's Chief Nurse & Health Chief both receiving honorary doctorates.

ALUMNI OF THE MONTH

We are pleased to introduce our next alumni of the month! Meet Rebecca Goldie who completed her BSc Architecture degree in 2012.

Rebecca currently works as a freelance Architectural designer. This includes surveying, CAD draft's and admin on a huge variety of projects, from winery facilities to private residences.

Rebecca has two special memories of UEL; "being able to explore the Fine Arts workshop as an elective and also the fantastic lecturer-guided study trips around the UK and Europe to discover how buildings work in practice".

Human Performance Clinic now open!

Achieving a significant milestone, the department of Applied Sport & Exercise Sciences’ Human Performance Clinic has recently opened - a first in the history of the department, as the consultancy service is led by students.

The clinic provides students with opportunities to gain applied experience, working with a range of clients, which in turn increases their employability. To date, students from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have worked with athletes from the (West Ham) Academy of Football, West Ham Women u21’s, GB Basketball, and individual clients from the community.

The Impact of student debt on the mental health of British graduates

The Psychology department at the University of Southampton has been working on a new research study to better understand if having student loan debt affects British graduates’ mental health.

We are looking for participants who:
•  Started University in the UK between 2008-2015
•  Had tuition fees set as a British Student or EU Nationals with home fee status
•  We would still like to hear from you even if you have already paid your loan off or you never had this in the first place

Updates from UEL School of Psychology 

Our MSc Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP)has been revalidated and will be launched in September 2023. Continuing the tradition of pacing the way towards the new phase of evolution for Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology – we are delighted to confirm that the MAPP team, under the bold and skilled steer of Prof Ilona Boniwell & Dr Andrea Giraldez-Hayes have secured successful revalidation of the course (MAPP was 1st launched in 2007 under Ilona’s vision and leadership alongside Prof Aneta Tunariu who was then the Head of Department and was the 1st such course in Europe for many years). The re-validated course entails a set of connected but distinguishable professional training applications of positive psychology and has technology enhanced active learning at its heart. It includes MAPP & Coaching Psychology; MAPP & Positive Leadership; MAPP & Positive Education MAPP & Positive Health. 


The 1st high profile event  to mark the count down to the launch, was a surprise visit and keynote by the one and only Professor Martin Seligman at UEL’s Stratford Campus (Jan, 19th 2023). Professor Seligman’s visit was part of an exhibition Positive emotions through photos: Children without borders” crated by Dr Natasha Shaginian & Mandy Seligman, intended together the science of Positive Psychology and its manifestation in the arts.

Mind the gap (MAPPCP alumni seminar series)

Monday 6th February 2023, 18:30-19:30, Online

A practical guide to building a bridge from theory to practice: Jenny Pack shares a case study (i.e. her personal experience) with blindly jumping into the MAPP-CP programme at UEL and surpassing her own expectations to emerge on the other side with an actual career change, working within the field. This “practivational” ( and uplifting) talk serves as a field guide for those in their MAPP-CP journey who are passionate about wellbeing but have not yet fully realized what they want to do with their knowledge. This presentation will encourage practitioners to look around corners, past the obvious applications of their MSc, to find their own unique contributions and potential future career opportunities.

UEL: After Dark

Wednesday 8th February 2023, 17:00 - 20:30, University of East London, Docklands Campus, University Way, London. E16 2RD.

For one night, UEL:After Dark will light up the university’s Docklands campus engaging students across all our sites; welcoming families and local businesses; and providing opportunities for everyone to watch or participate in a range of art, light and movement-based activities.
The evening itself will feature a community Lantern parade, fiery dance and drumming performances, fun drop-in sporting activities along an illuminated waterfront, and a number of magical installations at Docklands Campus. Throughout the evening a range of fresh street food and drinks will be available. We will also be running a night-time walking tour, facilitated by poets and artists, that will journey past iconic sites as well as lesser-known nooks and crannies of the city as we celebrate a return to cultural activity. Spaces on the walking tour are limited so please book your place.

Catherine Ashton - Inside Stories of 21st-Century Diplomacy

What does the crucial role of diplomacy really look like in today’s world? Explore it with Catherine Ashton during the public talk at UEL.
Catherine Ashton, author of And Then What: Inside Stories of 21st-Century Diplomacy, served as the European Union’s first High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy from 2009 to 2014.
In this talk, Ashton will take us behind the scenes to show us what worked and what didn’t, and how it felt to play a part in tackling some of the major international crises of our times.

Alumni Webinar Series with Desmond Appiah Manu

In the month of February we are joined by Desmond Appiah Manu, Macro Fixed Income Trading and Sales Associate at Barclays Bank. 
Desmond will be speaking about his career journey in Finance and giving insight on his role at Barclays Head Office.

Sports Alumni meet

Monday 27th February 2023, 18:00 - 19:30, Online

The new series of Interest Groups will now be led by an academic expert within the programme area, who will also be on hand to answer any questions as well as share specific knowledge that you may find insightful and helpful to your career. 

The aim of the monthly Alumni Interest Groups is to provide a place for like-minded Alumni who graduated from the same programme at UEL to come together and network on a platform that can be used for both formal and informal social networking purpose.

The Balkans and the Greater Middle East in the Global Vortex

Wednesday 15th-17th March 2023, 09:00-18:00, University of East London, University Square Stratford, 1 Salway Road, London. E15 1NF.

The Royal Docks School of Business & Law is organising a high-profile three-days international conference event on "The Balkans and the Greater Middle East in the Global Vortex". The symposium, organised on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies (Routledge/Taylor & Francies, 8 issues annually since 1998), will discuss the impact of the Ukraine war on the region of the Balkans and the Greater Middle East, as well as issues of democracy and sustainable economic development. Highlights of the symposium include a panel with Ambassadors and former British diplomats discussing how to achieve sustainable peace and economic development in the region.

UEL Enterprise support for Graduates

Alumni Start-up, Self-employment and Freelancing 121 Appointments are available to graduates. For further details please email enterprise@uel.ac.uk. Alumni can book a 121 session with an Enterprise Advisor via the Careerzone platform to get advice, support and guidance with their business/business ideas. 
BACK:ED is a business support programme supporting students and graduates to test, start and accelerate their business ideas. Participants are invited to engage in workshops, mentoring and networking opportunities and benefit from grant funding to invest in their ideas. The next programme is due to go ahead in Spring 2023 and applications will launch on the Careerzone platform in February. Graduates of up to two years are eligible to apply for the programme. We are looking for someone to drive the necessary changes to the university’s technology. This means leading the implementation of the technology element UEL’s Digital First Transformation Programme (DFTP). DFTP is a multi-£M programme of work comprising over 19 major IT improvement projects ranging from replacement of student administration systems, finance, and HR to technology enabled learning systems and student-facing systems.

You will provide development and management of the team and IT systems with an expectation to perform as a hands-on subject matter expert for the delivery and support of the UEL Desktop environment, application deployment and managing a modern digital workspace. You will also be key team player to the digital transformation to cloud technologies.

Head of Communications, The British Museum, London, £69,519 pa

The Head of Communications will lead on delivering a strategic and proactive approach to communications with responsibility for promoting the national and global significance of the British Museum's collection and its programme, and the objectives of the Museum's ambitious Masterplan in support of the Museum's public profile, and its corporate strategic objectives.    

Trusts & Foundations Fundraiser, Royal Hospital for Neuro Disability, London, £35,000 pa 

You will need a minimum of 18 months’ experience of working in a grant fundraising environment and a proven track record in securing five figure gifts. The work will cover a full range of the responsibilities a Senior Trusts officer typically has: research, engaging with trusts, engaging with the charity’s services to ensure the required project details are secured, applications, building relationships including reports.
