Welcome to the November 2021 edition of the University of East London's Alumni Network e-newsletter. 

We have some great news stories for you, including the Alumni Achievement Awards celebrating graduate’s impact, and how Black Alumni Teachers reflect on their University of East London Teacher Training.

Alumni Awards celebrate former students' impact

Alumni, University of East London staff and guests gathered at the SportsDock to hear citations and meet the recipients drawn from more than 300 nominations of inspiring graduates.

Black Alumni Teachers reflect on UEL Training

Teachers from Black & ethnic minority backgrounds who work in some of London's most disadvantaged areas have spoken about how their UEL Initial Teacher Training (ITT) education has propelled their careers.

Evelyn Roberts joins the Phoenix

Former Great Britain (GB) pathway player Evelyn Roberts is the latest name announced for the East London Phoenix. The 24-year-old is a 2.5 classification and will be one of eight players to play for the Phoenix.

Each month we will feature our Alumni of the Month in our E-newsletter and on our website and you will receive an exclusive gift and certificate. Nominations for Alumni of the month will close on the 3rd Monday of each month and will be featured in the following E-newsletter. ALUMNI OF THE MONTH

We are pleased to introduce our next alumni of the month! Meet Giovanni Luigi Bordone who completed International Fashion Business in 2014.

Giovanni has worked for Burberry and opened a Savile Row company in China. He has run corporate training all over the Asia Pacific region and recently became a researcher and a Uni lecturer in London.

Giovanni’s most special memory of UEL is his graduation ceremony, calling it a solemn moment in his life. You can read Giovanni’s full story, along with our other Alumni of the Month stories on our website.

UEL Alumna wins Student Nursing Times Award

Fahima Mustafe was nominated for the Student Nursing Times' Mary Seacole Award for bridging her professional aspirations to help others with supporting some of the most vulnerable in her local community. Growing up in a single-parent family, she used her own experience and money to help set up a local café supporting those experiencing domestic violence, insecure housing and food poverty. At the same time, she launched an outreach service distributing cooked meals to families during school holidays. Every day over Christmas, the café cooked 150 meals for families who needed help feeding their children.

The Office for Institutional Equity (OIE)

The Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) at UEL is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for our students and staff. We have some amazing events lined up this month and we’re inviting you to share your views on how we can work together to enhance a sense of belonging at the University, and to help you broaden your understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Join the Office for Institutional Equity team and guest presenters for a stimulating series of sessions about the ideas and practices that will move us towards the equitable, inclusive environment we seek for our students and staff community.

University of East London Alumni team Christmas Opening Hours

Ahead of the holiday period, we just wanted to make you aware that the Alumni office will be closed from 5 pm on 23rd December 2021 and we will re-open again at 9 am on Tuesday 4th January 2022.

If you would like to speak to a member of the team please contact us before or after these dates as we will not be monitoring emails during this time. Our usual opening times are 9-5 pm Monday-Friday.

School of Psychology Updates

Honorary Visiting Professor, Theo Gavrielides of the Restorative Justice for All International Institute, successfully held his inaugural lecture and book launch 'Power, Race and Justice: The restorative dialogue we won't have' on Wednesday 17 November at the University of East London. The event included a Q&A panel, was live streamed and well attended by staff, students and the community. Click here to watch Professor Theo’s first webinar on the book launch and lecture.

The School of Psychology welcomes Dr Jo Lloyd, our new Head of Department for Professional Psychology. Jo is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and a Registered Occupational Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council. Before joining UEL, Jo was the Head of Department for the Institute of Management Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Jo’s research sits at the nexus of occupational and clinical psychology, and she has published in world leading outlets in both areas.

Professor Dave Harper, Programme Director of the Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, featured on the BPS website and The Psychologist magazine talking about his involvement with a new book: 'The American way: Stories of invasion'. Click here to read more about the book.

My Early Life as a Researcher

In this session, Sahar Mirhadi discusses her journey in finishing her master in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology (MAPPCP) and securing a funded PhD programme in Intelligent Games and Games Intelligence (in the middle of the pandemic!).

Life after UEL webinar - Managing self-care practices

Tuesday 14th December 2021, 18:20-19:30, Online

The topic will be exploring the importance of managing self care practices in the plight of 'running the rat race', 'getting the bag' and the culture of a 'grind' mentality. Our webinar facilitator will be Rhyana, she is well-versed in this topic. Rhyana said "I find so many individuals are faced with decisions that run them down and burn them out but feel compelled to continue in this rat race. It needs to be addressed and I would love to be the person to help."

Social & Community Work Alumni Virtual Meet

Monday 20th December 2021, 18:00-19:30, Online

The aim of the monthly Alumni Interest Groups is to provide a place for likeminded Alumni to come together and network.Don’t worry! If you did not study a degree in the interest group topic, you are still welcome if the topic is of interest to you. There are no restrictions, and you are free to join as many of the meets as you would like to. 
The interest groups are YOUR SPACE where you can meet and share information, gain motivation and inspiration from each other, forming potential links that can help you within your career.

Time for Tea Catch Up

Tuesday 11th January 2022, 10:30-11:00, Online

The aim is to provide a place for UEL Alumni to come together for both a formal and informal social networking purpose. All alumni are welcome to join either one or more ‘Time for Tea Catch Ups’. It is a chance for you to discuss any topics on your mind or just have a light-hearted chat with no formal restrictions. Registration for each meet closes the Friday before the meeting date and joining instructions will follow shortly after registration closes.

We're looking for a UX Designer who can help improve our user experiences both online and offline. We currently have a niche UX Design team and are excited grow in this area. Our new website requires regular reviews of the user journey, and the online journey to becoming a student is also a part of that process.

University of East London, Strategic Planning Manager, London, £41,216 pa

You will operate within the Planning, Performance and Evaluation stream within the Strategic Planning Department. The department’s work is critical to enabling the University to plan and manage strategically in the context of the University’s Vision 2028 and translate that into business planning; and to ensuring the University meets statutory and regulatory reporting requirements.
