ALUMNI OF THE MONTH

We are pleased to introduce our next alumni of the month! Meet Doud Almuti who completed a Masters of Structural Engineering in 2019.

Doud currently works as a Structural Engineer Designer and has been working on research in Structural Engineering so he can achieve his dream of completing his PHD at UEL.

Doud said, “Walking with my roommates along the Thames Riverside is an unforgettable memory for me and engaging with hundreds of students from different backgrounds. It was a great experience in my life!!”

Alice McHaffie completes the roster 

East London Phoenix, the wheelchair basketball franchise owned by the University of East London (UEL), has announced that Alice McHaffie has joined the team ahead of their opener against Cardiff Met Archers on Friday 28 January. The 17-year-old won a bronze medal on her regional debut playing for Yorkshire Under 15s and has recently won gold with England North at the 2021 school games.

School of Psychology Updates

Child Psychologist, Professor Sam Wass at the @UELBabyDevLab spoke to BBC News describing how play supports children’s brains and helps them learn about the world around them. Professor Wass also featured on the BBC World Service programme, The Compass, discussing the importance of play and how it helps young children develop. Would you let a robot vaccinate you? Professor Mark McDermott spoke to Medical Expo News discussing whether people would be comfortable with robots administering their vaccines. Click here to read more. 

Associate Professor Dr Lucia Berdondini, from the School of Psychology, spoke to Metro UK about how we can build better relationships with our bodies. Dr Akshay Kumar, Senior Lecturer in Applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology, shares his publication in the prestigious Coaching Perspectives (2nd article, page 10). UEL academic shares art of walking with US students

The University of East London's Clare Qualmann will take up an international post at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) next month (February) as part of the US college's prestigious Jedel Foundation Visiting Artist programme.

Time for Tea Catch Up

Tuesday 8th March 2022, 10:30- 11:30am, Online

The aim is to provide a place for UEL Alumni to come together for both a formal and informal social networking purpose. All alumni are welcome to join either one or more ‘Time for Tea Catch Ups’. It is a chance for you to discuss any topics on your mind or just have a light-hearted chat with no formal restrictions. Registration for each meet closes the Friday before the meeting date and joining instructions will follow shortly after registration closes.

Women’s History Month Change Maker Panel

Thursday 10th March 2022, 18:30-19:30, Online

Women's History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. To celebrate this the alumni team have organised for several of our Alumni Advisory Board Change Maker winners from our 2021 Alumni Awards to take part in a panel discussion. 
The panel discussion will feature 4 of our fantastic Alumni Advisory Board Change Maker Winners along with the equally fantastic Jacqui Bashford, Chair of the Alumni Advisory board. 
The event is open to students, staff and graduates.

Alumni Advisory Board

Monday 28th March 2022, 18:30-20:00, Online & Physical (USS)

The board exists to advise on university wide projects and initiatives and represents the alumni body in relations with the University and its Alumni Engagement team. The board has been a great success to date and has a wide range of activities to improve both the student and alumni experience planned for the near future. If you would like to be involved in the board and attend our upcoming meeting, please email the Alumni team to register your interest.

Alumni Book Club

Book club is back! Join us for our revamped virtual group, where we will discuss different topics from a variety of books chosen by you. A chance to socialise with fellow graduates and learn something new!
