Alumni debuts Architecture for Kids Podcast Series Architecture for Kids brings together practitioners and creatives working with children and young people to inspire and to encourage them to participate in the shaping of the built environment, and to promote inclusivity, diversity, and a more sustainable approach for everyone. Launched in July 2023 by host & UEL Architecture Alumn Antonio Capelao, founder and director of Materials Matter Architecture Studio, and of award-winning Architecture for Kids CIC, the podcast is coproduced with the Built Environment Trust, the Thornton Education Trust,** and the Welsh School of Architecture Cardiff University.*** Architecture for Kids is a weekly podcast series, every Saturday between 4-6pm, currently has with over 24 episodes of insightful conversations about project based-learning pedagogies and co-design practices with children and young people to engage with their ideas, interests, and overall experience of the built environment. Speaking about the driving impetus behind his solo mission to host, to edit and to distribute the podcast, Antonio shared with The Built Environment Trust,* (and co-producer of the podcast) that “we are aware that our beliefs and opinions stem from our childhood, and are influenced by the developmental context in which we are brought up, and reinforced by peer groups and cultural influences – ultimately, influencing how we think of ourselves and the world around us. Therefore, if we want to change attitudes towards architecture and the built environment, and foster creativity and problem solving, we must focus on our children.” Architecture for Kids is available at Apple Podcasts, Buzzsprout, Youtube, Spotify, Google and where you listen to all your podcasts. Alumni support for Soho Kids Christmas Lights UEL Architecture graduate Antonio Capelao, assisted by Hannah Peaty (Assistant Head, Soho Parish Primary School) and Joshua Brooks (RIBA Interim Learning Manager), delivered a series of design workshops to the children to initiate their journey as lighting designers, that included a visit to the Andy Warhol: Textiles exhibition at the Fashion + Textile Museum, as well as the research of their local buildings, cultures, communities and traditions. Judges from a committee formed of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Lighting Industry Association (the LIA), the National Gallery, local business owners, councillors, residents, Hannah, and Antonio, jointly selected 14 of the 130 pupils’ designs, to be made into street lighting panels. Some of which, received an award from the RIBA and the LIA for their outstanding design works. In a curatorial workshop facilitated by Antonio and Hannah the 14 winners curated the lighting exhibition for the streets of Soho to showcase the 35 lights designed in the two previous editions and their 14 new designs. The Soho Kids Xmas Lights project is ongoing and every year new lights are added to the existing ones. Visitors can download a walking tour of the lights from now until 7th of January by clicking here. UEL welcomes you to join us for your NPQ or Masters in Leadership in January 2024!
