MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences

The psychology of sport is an ever-expanding area that looks to establish a way of enhancing athlete, player and other high performing groups outcomes. This is done through an evidence-based approach informed by research to allow practitioners to meet those aims.

Our MSc puts you at the forefront of this process and immerses you into sport psychology in a supportive and challenging way. You begin by examining theory and research within sport psychology and then move onto looking at ways of applying that theory as a researcher and potential practitioner. You finish your degree with a period in the workplace assisting relevant groups with performance enhancement and researching a topic that will hopefully give you the chance to contribute to the body of literature within sport psychology to inform future practices.

Strength and Conditioning Pathway:

Strength and conditioning is at the heart of all sports, by improving the fitness and function of the athletes. This course will develop skills and knowledge to allow you to have a sound knowledge base, that is applied into practice, to enhance performance. You begin by developing the understanding of strength production and how these would be linked to the creation of training programmes. This knowledge is put into practical application by developing the skills and coaching ability with athlete groups. You finish your postgraduate degree with a period in the work place assisting relevant groups with performance enhancement and researching a topic that will hopefully give you the chance to contribute to the body of literature within strength and conditioning to inform future practices.

Become an Apprentice with the University of East London

Why not get paid whilst working towards a higher or degree level qualification? Apprenticeships provide a great way to combine work with study, enabling learners to earn a salary at the same time as studying for a qualification.

As an apprentice you will spend at least 20% of your working hours studying for a Degree. This means that you would be employed to perform a specific job role and, at the same time, would study the subject specific to your Apprenticeship at the University of East London.

Your first step to become an apprentice is to find a job in your chosen area with an employer who will be able to support you through an Apprenticeship. You must be working between 30-40 hours per week and as an Apprentice, you are guaranteed a minimum wage.

As an Apprentice you will be entitled to the same benefits as other employees within your organisation such as holiday and pension.

If you are looking for apprenticeship opportunities, job sites such as Indeed and Reed advertise Apprentice level jobs across all sectors. If you know which area you are interested in, have a search of employers in those areas and look directly on their websites. Not Going To Uni is a good site to visit you can browse current apprenticeship vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Website. We work with both large organisations and SMEs including the NHS, Accenture, Costain, Skanska, Laing O’Rourke – and many more.

At the University of East London, we offer apprenticeships in a range of subjects and we are also developing new programmes. Visit our Apprenticeships webpage for more information by clicking here.

Green your business at the University of East London

The University’s Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) and Business Centre joined forces on Tuesday 8 June to host a virtual event to showcase the support available at the University to help businesses become more sustainable and develop green innovations.

The event kicked off with Professor Darryl Newport and Dr Mike Medas introducing the work of the SRI, including the ERDF-funded ARENA project which provides businesses with free support to develop and commercialise their innovative ideas, products and services in the areas of resource efficiency, urban green infrastructure, and nature-based solutions for urban resilience.

Guests then heard some first-hand accounts from businesses that are already collaborating with the University. Dharmesh Joshi and Manorma Joisi from AARDRA Systems talked about how the ARENA project is helping them develop smart controllers for major irrigation systems used in agriculture, horticulture and on sports fields. Manorma also explained how University of East London students will be involved in the project at all stages and help with the production of analytic data.

Tom Brennan, Director of St John’s Laboratory, who have been based at the Business Centre for six years, spoke about their journey towards a greener culture in e-commerce by taking a more resource-efficient approach to their packaging. Tom was joined by UEL graduate Momchil Papov who explained how his internship with St John’s Laboratory during his degree enabled him to ‘learn twice’ and apply the skills he was developing to a real life business.

The University has a long history of supporting entrepreneurs in East London through its Enterprise programmes and Business Centre. Manager Duncan Boak talked about the transition he is leading of the Business Centre to a new Sustainable Enterprise Centre on the Docklands campus which will support the launch and growth of green, tech, socially impactful organisation that create good jobs for the people of Newham.

The final presentation came from Matt Davies, Head of Economic Development for the Royal Docks Enterprise Zone, who briefed guests on the wider initiatives taking place in the area, including the development of a Green Tech Quarter in London’s Royal Docks and the ambition to make it a Living Wage Place.

The event ended with a question and answer session, which demonstrated the interest in this topic amongst the East London business community and the need for more services and support. As one guest put it: “The event was excellent. I hope it’s only the beginning of what’s to come in the future.” The UEL team are already planning how to keep the momentum going. Watch this space.

School of Psychology Update

Dr Jérémy E. Lemoine, Lecturer In Occupational And Organisational Psychology has recently published: “Pleasure, meaning or spirituality: Cross-cultural differences in orientations to happiness

across 12 countries” in the Journal of Business Research. It describes the relationships between different concepts of happiness in 12 countries. Click here to access the publication. Link to publication here.

Congratulations to Dr Jolanta Golan who has successfully defended her PhD. Jolanta’s thesis investigated auditory and speech processing and its impact on language development in infants, toddlers and primary school children. The main finding of her research was that knowing how well a child's brain discriminates sounds in the environment informs if they may develop language difficulties.

UEL Psychology Graduate and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist Fergus McGrath has just published a self-help book with a difference. Two differences actually.

Firstly, the motive for writing the book, according to Fergus, was to try to write self-help content that was decidedly different from that in many other self-help books by providing inspiring, realistic, and reassuring self-help text that was not dumbed down. To this end, he selected a number of what he describes as ‘bread and butter’ self-help themes and explored them with reference to personal indulgences such as philosophy, psychotherapy, science, poetry, psychology, sport, literature, song and spirituality.

Secondly, Fergus’ self-help book doubles up as a critique of self-help books in general!

The title of the book is ‘The Aware Self: A Compendium Of Conscious Living’. It is currently available in E-Book format only with audio and hard copy versions imminent. Further information about the book, including a free preview and purchasing options, are available on Fergus’ website at www.cogbeh.com.
