NOTICEBOARD

Graduate Placements- immediate starts available

The University of East London promotes work-based learning to consolidate theoretical knowledge and provide opportunities for industrial learning, which is essential for students to succeed upon graduation. As such, we have embedded a placement or group consultancy project option into some of our postgraduate programmes. We are seeking interesting and challenging opportunities for students to work on placements, or group projects (campus-based), to provide them with industrial experience which will enable them to meet their learning objectives. Placement hosts and project sponsors should provide a constructive and supportive working environment, and in return will gain additional resources which can be used to manage projects, conduct valuable research, and support teams. Placements are being sourced for students from the following programmes:

– Master of Business Administration (MBA)
– MSc Computer Science
– MSc Information Security & Digital Forensics
– MSc Civil / Structural Engineering
– MSc Construction Engineering Management

Placements and projects take place over two academic terms which are around 8 months. During this time students are required to be on placement at least 3 days per week.

As academic placements are exempt from National Minimum Wage, they are typically unpaid. However, reimbursement for lunch and travel is suggested. Some organisations choose to pay a salary which makes the role more attractive for students.

Taking on a placement student can be a rewarding experience. Some of the key benefits include bringing a new perspective to the work of your team and getting fresh views and ideas on a particular project or work area. The placement may also provide existing members of your team with a development opportunity, in delivering mentoring and support to the student. It is also a wonderful way to find time and resources to tackle any projects that have been put on the backburner.

If you would like further information on offering a student placement, contact the Placements Team at placements@uel.ac.uk.

Former UEL alumni awarded prestigious accolade for his community work across East London and beyond

On the 7th September 2021, Rofikul Islam BCA has been selected for 2021 People’s Honour as the esteemed recipient of the prestigious award for his commitment to social justice and his community leadership roles over the last 15 years.

Rofikul was among the 27 extraordinary people selected from a nationwide campaign for the British Citizen Award Medal, a nationally recognized programme in the United Kingdom for individuals doing extraordinary leadership and social activism work in their communities and beyond.

Dubbed the People’s Honours, each Medal bears the words ‘For the Good of the Country’ and is presented to only a small number of exceptional individuals twice annually. The British Citizen Award is widely viewed as the nation’s way of recognizing extraordinary, everyday people for the exceptional endeavour and truly represents today’s multicultural Britain.

After a series of successes in his role as a community activist and a leader, he was nominated and awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2020 by the Court of the Common Council, making him one of the youngest British-Bangladeshi recipients of the highest level of award from the City of London.

Rofikul is a passionately proactive young leader. He genuinely wants to make his community a better place to live and enact positive change, coming up with the vision and action plan to make this a reality. He regularly shares his skills and talents with those around him to make a positive change in local and international communities. This has included raising over half a million pounds for various charities over the years, including providing leadership skills to various organizations and institutions.

His leadership journey started as a Deputy Leader of the Student Council in Stepney All Saint’s (formerly Sir John Cass) Sixth Form. This has led him to various levels of community action campaigns in the national and international arena, whereby he represented the United Kingdom in various high-level meetings and round table discussions with Prime Ministers, Presidents, and other senior government officials.

Rofikul attended the School of Education and Communities at the University of East London and later attended the Centre for Islamic Studies at Oxford University to train in leadership studies. Working as a public servant, where he manages the electoral districts for elected officials and oversees a range of projects.

Speaking after the ceremony at the House of Lords, Rofikul commented, “this is a huge honour for me, and I would like to thank my family, colleagues, mentors for their guidance and faith in me. A huge thank you to the People’s Honours BCA for recognizing me.”

On 14 September, Mr Carr received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of East London (UEL) at their School of Education and Communities graduation ceremony near the Docklands campus. He gave an acceptance speech to hundreds of new UEL graduates and their families, many of whom are West Ham United fans.

African Diaspora Dance Leader Mercy Nabirye Honoured by UEL

Throughout a career in African dance and arts that spans more than 30 years, Mercy Nabirye has sought to raise awareness of dance forms and dancers from across the African diaspora. A world-class artist, teacher and arts leader, Ms Nabirye works with individuals and organisations around the world to practice, raise awareness of and collaborate on African diaspora arts.

Ms Nabirye was honoured by the University of East London with an Honorary Doctorate of Arts at a ceremony for its School of Arts and Creative Industries on 13 September near the Docklands Campus.

At the ceremony, Ms Nabirye advised students to be open to the world, and in doing so they will find their voice and be ready to face new challenges and goals as they make their mark in the world.

She said, "Change is an ideal that is evolutionary and a constant and you must continuously adapt to the change. The last 18 months have been uncertain for all of us, but it is also full of promise. I urge you to look at this experience as a 'pause' and an opportunity to pay attention, to reflect on old truths and insights to be able to embrace new beginnings."
