UEL Alumnus helps create ‘Doggerland: An Immersive Climate Change Experience’

London based heritage organisation Past Futures, is launching an immersive art experience to be screened in the heart of the East London community of Hackney, during COP26 discussions at the start of November.

Funded by Arts Council England and the National Lottery, DOGGERLAND intends to take viewers on a journey across time, from the end of the last Ice Age to the present day.

Visitors to the exhibition will see the sights and experience some of the feelings that people in DOGGERLAND would have been going through when they experienced sea level rise and lost their homes, being forced to migrate to new lands because of climate change, a fate which millions face - especially in Asia - over the next few years.

Bringing to life the sense of urgency, the immersive experience will be broadcast onto multiple television screens in a retro news flash style, with the visual art experience being best viewed from outside the gallery. Lead curator Micha Nestor commented “As our work at Past Futures focuses on engaging underrepresented people with history and art, we wanted to ensure that the DOGGERLAND exhibition was easily accessible. This is why we chose to display this work in a gallery situated within a residential area, ultimately selecting the experimental art space Filet.”

Visitors will experience the sounds and emotions that may have been witnessed by our ancestors whose culture was washed away, off the East coast of Britain 8,000 years ago.

As well as raising awareness of this forgotten aspect of British history, DOGGERLAND will also expose the impact that the Earth’s cycles and space has on our ever-changing planet, as well as examining how pollution caused by humans has contributed to the acceleration in climate change which has affected us and other species since the beginning of time.

COP26 - the UN climate change conference - will see the world’s leaders descend on the UK to discuss the world’s environmental issues and pledge to make changes which will help to halt the climate crisis.

Whilst the British government has recognised a climate emergency, the issue is one which still is yet to permeate and reach many cultures and communities across the UK and the rest of the world. DOGGERLAND will highlight the forgotten history of prehistoric Britain, when the land of DOGGERLAND was lost to sea level rise over time, completely cutting off Britain from the rest of Europe. As well as shining a light on this important part of British history, the exhibition will also feature contemporary issues surrounding climate change in countries including India and Bangladesh.

Continuing to provide inclusive cultural spaces which are accessible to all, Past Futures hopes DOGGERLAND will encourage new groups of people to discuss the issue of climate change which affects us all. ‘So often diverse people feel excluded from cultural spaces, such as museums and art galleries, so we wanted to tear down these barriers, by creating the freedom to view this exhibition

DOGGERLAND hopes to inspire conversations around the topic and create real change, as well as making the issue more relatable by drawing parallels between our contemporary problems, and the same issues which affected people in Britain in the past.

As with all our work at Past Futures, we hope to create a cultural experience which will engage underrepresented people with history and art, sparking those much needed conversations in the local community about the issues of environment and how to influence discussions at COP26.

DOGGERLAND: An Immersive Climate change Experience will be available to view exclusively at Filet Art Space, Murray Grove, Hackney, London, N1 7QP from 1st-12th November 2021, between 12-6pm daily.
