Research Project Title: The impact of BAME students' social, cultural and racial identities on degree attainment

I am Sanjeevika(Sanju) Dissanayake, and one of the UEL Alumni members. I am undertaking a piece of qualitative research for the dissertation of my MA at Goldsmiths, University of London. I would like to invite you to participate in this research.

This research will critically investigate how BAME students’ race, culture and identity affect the BAME attainment awarding gap in the university. I encourage participants to share their genuine stories to discuss the challenges they face during their study time. This might lead to finding out any concealed factors affecting the attainment awarding gap related to wider social, community, and cultural issues that many live through and never had the opportunity to share with anyone.

If you decide to participate, an interview would be arranged at a time and place of your convenience. If you prefer more privacy, we can meet online. The interview will take approximately 1 hour (but this depends on how much you have to say). There are no right or wrong answers. What is important is your opinions and feedback. All the information that I collect about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. You will not be able to be identified in any ensuing reports or publications.

As a participant you have the opportunity to;

  • Express your thoughts openly to a supportive person
  • Contribute towards the advancement of university service development for its students

Participation in this research is completely voluntary and you may choose to withdraw from the research at any time or not answer questions that you do not feel comfortable answering.

If you would like to take part please click here to complete this online Research Participant Information Form by 8th April 2022.

You can also contact me at sanju5178@yahoo.co.uk or ssama001@gold.ac.uk for further details on any aspect of the process.

Thank you & Best Wishes,

Sanjeevika(Sanju) Dissanayake

In arranging one-to-one and group sessions conducted by students, for students, their passion translates into the realisation of many of the competences of UEL’s flagship ‘Mental Wealth | Professional Fitness’ Framework. Basing themselves at the Stratford ‘Health’ Campus, they hold regular awareness events such as the Skills for Flourishing workshop series – bringing together subject-area experts who share their passion, wisdom, and experience with likeminded others. Click here to find out more about the WPS Clinic.

UEL Professor in International Economics main guest on National Greek TV

Professor Vassilis K. Fouskas, Co-Director of STAMP and Research Degrees Leader in the School, participated as the main gust on Greek national TV, "Anichnefseis", directed by veteran investigative journalist, Mr Pantelis Savvides. The topic of the conversation was the crisis in Ukraine and its impact on Greek-Turkish relations. Prof Fouskas argued that an immediate de-escalation of the conflict is necessary establishing permanent parameters for peace, as continuation of war would have spill-over effects in the Balkans and the Black Sea region. His position was debated, among others, by retired Ambassador, Eleftherios Karayiannis, and Admiral, Dimitris Tsailas.
