We have some great news stories for you, including a message from the Vice Chancellor & President, and stories from the University of East London's recent graduation ceremonies.

A message from the Vice Chancellor & President

On behalf of the whole University community, I extend our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, to all in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth and to the wider global community whose lives Her Majesty touched.

University of East London celebrates graduates' success

It was a celebration of achievement and success as more than 4,500 graduates donned gowns and mortarboards to receive their degrees at the University of East London.

Sports Journalist awarded Honorary Doctorate

Award-winning journalist Roshane Thomas has been awarded an honorary doctorate of journalism by the University of East London (UEL).

Each month we will feature our Alumni of the Month in our E-newsletter and on our website and you will receive an exclusive gift and certificate. Nominations for Alumni of the month will close on the 3rd Monday of each month and will be featured in the following E-newsletter. ALUMNI OF THE MONTH

We are pleased to introduce our next alumni of the month! Meet Alexander Ojimba who completed his degree in Communication Studies in 2004.

Alexander currently works as a Global Pastor, Preacher and Motivational Speaker. Alexander also writes gospel and cultural books, as well as making documentaries.

Alexander's one special memory of UEL was discovering his passion for creative writing; "I was very average in my first and second year but discovering creative writing in the second year made all the difference for me. Game changer."

UEL Alumnus achieves Director of Sports role

Haroun Korjie, who graduated from UEL in 2017 with a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science, is now working as director of sports in the Ministry of Sports in Sierra Leone.

Haroun was recently back in the UK as a key member of the Sierra Leone delegation at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Haroun  is a two-time Olympian, having competed as a sprinter in the 4x400m relay in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games in Barcelona and Atlanta, USA. Haroun was also a silver medallist at the African Games in Cairo, Egypt, in 1991. He also competed in 4x100m relay events.

RDSBL have dedicated part of the content to ‘Graduate Testimonials’ and are asking for RDSBL graduates to share their student experience and how studying at The University of East London has helped their career progression.

School of Psychology updates

A counselling psychologist from the University of East London, discusses how we can accept and overcome grief, as we mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Dr Lucy Poxon, lecturer in counselling psychology, spoke to The Metro and appeared on Times Radio discussing grief, how it is interpreted in the brain and what we can do to overcome and accept loss in the wake of the Queen's passing.

Dr Jeremy E Jeremy Lemoine published Life satisfaction in Europe and Iran: the role of self esteem, gender identification and ambivalent sexism (Rollero, C., Czepczor-Bernat, K., Fedi, A. et al). Life satisfaction in Europe and Iran: the role of self-esteem, gender identification and ambivalent sexism. Curr Psychol (2022).
Dr Zahra Tizro comments on how women in Iran are resisting enforced hijab rules, “Iranian women under pressure as Raisi stiffens hijab mandate”. Click here to read more.

John Read, Professor of Clinical Psychology, was made an Honorary Life Member of the International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis. Congratulations to Prof. John Read, Professor of Clinical Psychology who was made was made an Honorary Life Member of the International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis in a ceremony at their 22nd bi-annual conference in Perugia, Italy this month.
John has served on the Board of the organisation’s UK branch and, from 2003 to 2014, on the International Executive Committee. He was the founding editor, in 2009,  of ISPS’s scientific journal ‘Psychosis: Psychological, Social and Integrative Approaches’, and remains the Editor to this day.  Only 12 members can hold the position of Honorary Life member at any one time.

UEL shortlisted for Higher Education Award

The University of East London has been shortlisted for International Collaboration of the Year at this year's Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

The aim of the monthly Alumni Interest Groups is to provide a place for likeminded Alumni who graduated from the same programme at UEL to come together and network on a platform that can be used for both a formal and informal social networking purpose.

This is an excellent opportunity to recognise the achievements of our alumni in a wide range of areas and come together to celebrate their success. This year we are pleased to announce the addition of another new award to our existing categories: The UEL 125th anniversary celebratory award. This award allows us to reflect on the values and ambitions that unite us. It brings together a sense of belonging and community and celebrates the alumni or group of alumni who have made a positive impact on the history of east London, in the same way, the university has.
