School of Psychology Updates

Nearly 60 graduates of UEL's MA Counselling & Psychotherapy course attended its first MA Counselling & Psychotherapy 'Research & Activism' conference on Saturday, June 11th at the Stratford campus.  One aim was to showcase the research of our graduates who achieved academic publication through the lockdown. Another goal - reflected in the 'Research and Activism' theme - was to demonstrate how therapists can use research rooted in their practice as a tool to campaign for social justice.

Our keynote speakers led the way.  Linda Aspey, a well-known environmental activist and Dr Arlene Weekes whose academic work is rooted in challenging internalised prejudice demonstrated how their passion had translated into research that makes a difference.

Our own graduates' work was equally inspiring. One common theme was how the therapeutic framework adapts to crisis whether forced on therapists by Covid-19; coping with the incomprehensible tragedy of Grenfell; or dealing with the challenge of contexts such as domestic abuse and high security prisons.

The day was both memorable and sociable as ex-students reunited having not had the chance to meet with classmates since we plunged into lockdown. Participants' feedback was excellent and it's hoped this will be the first of many.

Dr Burcin Baskurt and Dr Hanna Kampman, Senior lecturers in MSc Applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology (MAPP-CP) published a paper: How does social support shape the relationship between career calling and PERMA? In the European Journal of Applied Positive Psychology, 6, 4, 1-15. Click here to read more.

Dr Mary Spiller was a guest speaker on the Internal Object radio show and spoke about SYNESTHESIA. This is a perceptual phenomenon where a sensory signal from one sense can simulate a secondary sensory experience. Individuals with synaesthesia report seeing music, numbers having specific colours or tastes, and days of the week as structures in space. Dr Spiller explains how this phenomenon works, what happens in the brain and what personalities these types of people typically have. Music consists of industrial, electronic, experimental punk and metal. Click here to listen to the interview.
