UEL joins force with leading gender inclusive GFW Clothing for internship scheme

Three students on the MA International Fashion Business will now start their summer internship at the leading gender free company GFW Clothing in Hove, a partnership developed by Kent Le, programme director of the MA and Lisa Honan, managing director of GFW.

Gender Free World Clothing was set up by Sally Russell OBE, Paul Dickinson and Lisa Honan to tackle issues around body positivity in fashion. The brand has seen significant growth and is looking for fresh talent and new ideas to boost its market growth and develop new marketing strategies. In April, GFW Clothing approached UEL Fashion team to develop an internship competition. Students needed to provide market audit for the company and outline key marketing and social media strategies for the brand. Three competition winners would then have a chance to intern in a wide range of positions in marketing, strategy and buying in the company. The competition forms part of the Level 7 fashion consultancy project which provides students a chance of gaining work experience in a fashion company, build up their exit portfolio and improve their employability.

Last month Kent Le, programme director MA International Fashion Business, travelled to GFW Clothing flagship store in Hove to conclude the competition and judge the entries with the board of directors.

Kent Le said: "We were blown away by the high quality of student work and the efforts that have been put in to produce these insightful reports for the company. Paul and Lisa were so impressed they decided to make the scheme permanent, which mean the internships are now exclusive to UEL, providing valuable and sustainable employment opportunities to our Fashion students"

Congratulations to the three winners: Beant Kaur, Fenella Waike-Pawsney and Madgalena Zocholl

Become an Apprentice with the University of East London

Why not get paid whilst working towards a higher or degree level qualification? Apprenticeships provide a great way to combine work with study, enabling learners to earn a salary at the same time as studying for a qualification.

As an apprentice you will spend at least 20% of your working hours studying for a Degree. This means that you would be employed to perform a specific job role and, at the same time, would study the subject specific to your Apprenticeship at the University of East London.

Your first step to become an apprentice is to find a job in your chosen area with an employer who will be able to support you through an Apprenticeship. You must be working between 30-40 hours per week and as an Apprentice, you are guaranteed a minimum wage.

As an Apprentice you will be entitled to the same benefits as other employees within your organisation such as holiday and pension.

If you are looking for apprenticeship opportunities, job sites such as Indeed and Reed advertise Apprentice level jobs across all sectors. If you know which area you are interested in, have a search of employers in those areas and look directly on their websites. Not Going To Uni: Apprenticeships & Work Experience in the UK is a good site to visit to find opportunities across the country. You can browse current apprenticeship vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Website. We work with both large organisations and SMEs including the NHS, Accenture, Costain, Skanska, Laing O’Rourke – and many more.

Visit our Apprenticeships web page for more information by clicking here.
